A collection of letters from a father to a son that is best described as a manual on interpersonal tact and self-development. A worldly work, full of much practical wisdom and valuable insights into human nature and nurture. These letters are recommended for younger readers who seek to empower themselves through self-understanding, and the general study of human society (at every level). The English is a little antiquated, but still very readable. This book reminds us that the more things change, the more we remain the same.

A succint, yet surpisingly substantive, insightful, and elegant treatment by Clinton T. Greenleaf. Published in November 2000, this book is a quick and engaging read, with plenty of good advice and information. Destined to wind up where it's needed most. Greenleaf's Attention to Detail: A Woman's Guide to Professional Appearance and Conduct is somewhat of a cult classic among younger business women. For those blessed/cursed with adolescent offspring, it might be a good idea to consider acquiring a copy of Attention to Detail : A Teen's Guide to Appearance and Conduct, also by Clinton T. Greenleaf.

The Book of the Courtier

In his Il Cortegiano (1528; first translated into English as `The Courtier' by Sir Thomas Hobyin 1561), Baldassare Castiglione (1478-1529) outlines his ideal of the perfect gentleman. The treatise is presented as four conversations on four successive evenings by a group of learned gentlemen. Their discussions include the birth and education of the gentleman; the gentleman's behavior in the daily circumstances of life; the perfection of the noblewoman; and finally, the nature of love and its power to ennoble. The final evening's conversation offers Castiglione's interpretation of the Platonic doctrine of spiritual love and its affects. Il Cortegiano was one of the most influential and famous products of Italian Renaissance Literature. A most interesting sojourn in the quest for the gentlemanly ethos.
